Lauren Price wants to ‘be in massive fights’ after winning titles

Lauren Price is setting her sights on challenging the top contenders in the women’s welterweight division following her impressive performance in Cardiff.

In just her seventh professional bout, Price clinched the WBA, IBO, and Ring Magazine world titles, adding to her Olympic gold medal from Tokyo in 2021. Her latest triumph came against Jessica McCaskill, who was unable to continue after a clash of heads in the ninth round resulted in a severe swelling over her left eye, leaving the decision to the judges.

Price showcased her skills with a commanding performance, earning unanimous scores of 90-82. Ringside were fellow world welterweight champions Ivana Habazin, Natasha Jonas, and Sandy Ryan, likely eyeing Price as a formidable challenger.

“The 147 division offers some exciting prospects for me, and I’m determined to go all the way,” said Price, who now holds the distinction of being Wales’ first female world champion and the 14th overall.

“I want to return, defend my belts, and participate in significant fights,” Price continued. “I know the other champions were watching, but I’ll discuss my next steps with my trainer, Rob McCracken.”

Reflecting on her achievement, Price remarked, “I always said nothing could surpass my Olympic gold medal, but the support and reception I’ve received are definitely on par with it. Welsh fans rally behind their own, and I’m truly grateful.”

Looking ahead, Price envisions fighting at Cardiff City Stadium, where she has previously played football, or even at the Principality Stadium, which boasts a capacity of 74,500.

While these stadium fights may be on the horizon, BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom sees immense potential for Price in both the welterweight and middleweight categories.

“What we witnessed here was greatness—a superb talent and a complete fighter,” Shalom commented. “I believe we’ve just witnessed the start of something extraordinary in boxing.”

Comparing Price’s potential impact to that of Katie Taylor in Ireland, Shalom expressed confidence in Price’s ability to make a similar mark in Wales.

“The welterweight division presents numerous big names, fights, and opportunities,” Shalom added. “However, looking ahead to the middleweight category, where Lauren secured her gold medal, you’ve got Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields.”

Shalom concluded optimistically, “With the right development and path, the super-fight of the future could be Price against Shields—they could emerge as the top two female boxers in the world.”
