Louis Rees-Zammit runs length of the field to score as Kansas City Chiefs crowd roars

The Welshman is making waves across the pond as pre-season intensifies

Louis Rees-Zammit scored a touchdown during a Kansas City Chiefs public training session, eliciting cheers and horn blasts from fans on the sidelines.

The Penarth-born athlete has been in camp since Tuesday, 16th July, participating in pre-season sessions specifically designed for rookies and quarterbacks. Veterans, including superstar Travis Kelce, arrived on Sunday, 21st July, marking the first official day of training camp. Since then, the squad has been diligently training at their facility at Missouri Western State University.

During a practice session on Wednesday, 24th July, the Chiefs were rehearsing the new kick-off rule. For those unfamiliar, this rule will significantly benefit Rees-Zammit as it resembles aspects of rugby. Essentially, the catching player (Rees-Zammit) now has more time to initiate an attack because the kicking team is not allowed to move until he catches the ball or it hits the ground.

Footage posted by a Chiefs page on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows Rees-Zammit catching the ball from kick-off and utilising his incredible speed. Supported by his defensive teammates, Rees-Zammit navigated through the crowded field, running the length of the field and crossing into the end zone. The post was captioned: “Chiefs international prospect Louis Rees-Zammit was back on kick returns, which would be natural given his rugby background.”

Rees-Zammit sensationally quit rugby in January to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL. Having come through the International Player Pathway and signed with the Chiefs, the Welshman is certainly on track to make that dream a reality. The next challenge for the former Wales star is to secure a spot on the final 53-man roster, and his value on special teams, particularly during kick-offs, could prove to be crucial when the squad is finalised.
