Quins work hard for bonus point win

PEMBROKE DOCK Quins had to work hard for their bonus point victory against a very durable and committed Tregaron side who fought hard right till the end.

The game got off to a dramatic start when the Quins scored under the Curlews posts with just 5 minutes on the clock.

After a suspected knock on and a mix up under the uprights Quins Flanker Danny Wilkes, who had a magnificent match, dived on the ball for his first try for the Quins, Outside Half Euan Macdonald knocked over the conversion to put the Quins 7-0 up.

The Quins though were starting to give away too many penalties, after 10 minutes Tregaron forced three lineouts on the Quins 5 yd line and from the third Lineout Flanker Dewi Jones scrambled over after the Quins had defended the first two admirably. Outside Half Rhyddian Jones missed the conversion.

For the rest of the Half, which was littered with errors, there was no more scoring, but one could sense the Quins were getting on top.

With the game in the balance, it was the Quins who struck first, with probably their best try of the season. A beautifully weighted pass from Euan Macdonald on Half way line sent Quins Right Winger Jamie Topp scorching up the touch line, he got within 5 yds of the Curlews line before popping a pass to the Full Back Thomas Wheeler who scored in the corner, Euan MacDonald converted with a magnificent kick from the touchline to extend the Quins lead 14-5.

On the hour, the Quins added their third try when young 2nd Row Ben Gibby crashed over from a tap penalty for his second try of the season, Euan MacDonald missed the conversion.

Tregaron had looked threatening if they got a sniff of the Quins line, and indeed with just 10 minutes left Prop Geriant Jones forced his way over the Quins line close to the posts, Rhyddian Jones converted and suddenly with the score at 19-12 the Curlews looked back in it.

Five minutes from time came the decisive moment, as the visitors tried to move the ball on their own 25, but replacement Sam (Rasher) James intercepted a wayward Pass and raced away to score and grab the all important bonus point for his second try in a fortnight. Euan MacDonald added the extras.

The visitors had the last laugh though when Hooker Dorian Pugh crashed over for the Curlews third close range try of the match, Rhyddian Jones converted to give his side a well deserved losing bonus point to end the Scoring, as the Referee blew for full time.
