WRU confirms Cardiff Rugby sale to Y11 as club to remain independent

Major development reshapes Welsh rugby landscape

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has named Ospreys owners Y11 Sports & Media as the preferred bidder for Cardiff Rugby, confirming that the capital club will remain independent. The move allows one group to hold ownership of two of Wales’ professional teams, at least in the short term.

Following a unanimous decision by the WRU board, Cardiff Rugby and Y11 will now enter an exclusivity period to finalise the deal. The WRU has emphasised its commitment to preserving the Cardiff brand and heritage, making a merger with the Ospreys highly unlikely.

Once the transaction is completed, Y11 will take full ownership of Cardiff Rugby, which will continue to operate as a separate club in the city. The group will also retain ownership of the Ospreys, who will remain in the United Rugby Championship (URC) and EPCR competitions until at least the end of the 2026/27 season. Beyond that, Y11’s long-term plans for the Ospreys remain unclear.

The WRU is confident both clubs can compete in top-level competitions despite shared ownership. The exclusivity period will last for up to 60 days, during which detailed negotiations and due diligence will take place. At its conclusion, the final terms of the deal will be confirmed and communicated.

The competing bid came from a consortium led by former Cardiff director Martyn Ryan, alongside Rhino CEO Reg Clarke and three prominent Hollywood producers.

While the WRU continues to advocate reducing the number of Welsh professional clubs from four to three, it seeks to achieve this through consensus rather than a protracted tender process, which could take six months or longer.

Previously, it was suggested that a successful Y11 bid might signal the end of the Ospreys and pave the way for the WRU’s three-club model. That scenario remains possible, but not guaranteed, as the WRU has insisted on maintaining control over the governance of any surviving clubs—a stance strongly opposed by the Dragons and Scarlets’ funding directors.

WRU Statement in Full:

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) today confirmed its intention to sell Cardiff Rugby to Y11 Sports & Media following a rigorous open bidding process. The parties will now enter an exclusivity period to finalise the deal. The decision is subject to contract and would secure a new owner for Cardiff Rugby, ensuring long-term stability under private ownership.

The WRU Board, in a unanimous decision on 19 January 2026, prioritised the financial security of Cardiff Rugby, including access to identified funding and long-term investment. The board also considered commitment to the club’s brand and heritage in reaching its decision.

On completion, Y11 will become the owners of Cardiff Rugby, which will remain an independent club and brand in Cardiff, while also retaining the Ospreys as a separate club. Ospreys will continue competing in the URC and EPCR until at least the end of the 2026/27 season.

The exclusivity period will last no more than 60 days to complete negotiations and due diligence. At the end of this period, the transaction will be confirmed and all parties informed.

The WRU remains committed to supporting both teams and will provide updates on progress. The other bidder has been informed of the board’s decision and thanked for their participation.
