Two men charged with historic child sex offences at assessment centre

Accused worked at former Coed Glas facility in Abergavenny

TWO men have been charged with a total of 45 offences relating to allegations of sexual and physical abuse at a former children’s assessment centre in Monmouthshire.

The offences are alleged to have taken place at the former Coed Glas Assessment Centre in Abergavenny, which operated between the 1970s and 1990s under the former Gwent County Council. The centre closed in 1995.

Following an investigation by Gwent Police into claims of historic abuse, Angus Riddell, aged 69, from Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Robin Griffiths, aged 65, from Blaenau Gwent, were arrested on 20 June and later charged.

Riddell faces 38 charges, including:

  • Three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 16,
  • One count of attempted indecent assault on a girl under 16,
  • Fourteen counts of indecent assault on a boy under 14,
  • Twenty counts of assault, ill-treatment, neglect, or abandonment of a child likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury.

Griffiths has been charged with seven counts of indecent assault on a boy under the age of 14.

The charges relate to 16 alleged victims.

Both men have been released on bail and are due to appear at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 3 July.

Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Tuck of Gwent Police said: “We urge the public to allow the judicial process to take its course and avoid any speculation or comment on social media that could impact the case.”
