AFTER a week of heavy rain and high winds, there is finally some better weather news for Wales. According to the Met Office, temperatures are set to rise and the sun is expected to make an appearance after a soggy end to the week. The outlook for Wales from Sunday to Tuesday says that it will be “staying settled with plenty of bright or sunny spells,” with temperatures feeling warm especially in the sunshine.
BBC Wales weather presenter Derek Brockway confirmed this on Friday, saying that Saturday would be dry and settled with some sunny spells and a little warmer with light winds. Temperatures of 16°C are being forecast by the Met Office in Cardiff, Usk and Swansea on Monday, with sunny spells for most of next week. There is more cloud around in western parts, including Aberystwyth, but there are still expected to be highs of 16°C on Monday.

Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir explains that there will be a “change in air mass” over the weekend, meaning higher temperatures and drier weather. She says, “We will see a cold start to Saturday with some pockets of frost. It will be bright with some sunshine through Saturday morning. There will be sparkling blue skies, and it will feel warm in shelter.” Saturday night into Sunday could see another frost, but Sunday will start a bit more cloudy. The sun will come through the day, and temperatures could reach 18 or 19°C, and into next week there will be some high temperatures around with some places reaching 20°C.
The long-range forecast is also looking positive for the UK until near the end of the month, with temperatures forecast to be “well above average.” The Met Office forecast for Tuesday, April 18 to Thursday, April 27, says that most places will stay dry with sunny spells, while temperatures will be around average to rather warm. There is an increasing likelihood of some showers later in the week, especially in the SW, but temperatures will still be above average, locally well above average. Eastern coastal areas are likely to be cooler with an onshore breeze, with some locally chilly nights in good shelter.
Overall, it seems that Wales can look forward to some brighter and warmer weather over the next few days and even weeks. After a long period of heavy rain and high winds, this change in weather is a welcome relief for many.
