Police treating Old Workhouse fire as suspicious

POLICE have said that a fire at a former workhouse on Penlan Road in Carmarthen is being treated as suspicious.

The fire, which happened on Friday afternoon (Mar 2), resulted in the arrest of two youths, who were later released under investigation.

Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Police in Carmarthen are investigating a fire which occurred at approximately 4.50pm on friday, March 2nd, at the Old Workhouse, Penlan Road, Carmarthen.

“The fire is currently being treated as suspicious. No-one was injured during the incident.

“Two local youths were arrested in connection with the incident and later released under investigation.

“Anyone with information that can help officers with their investigation is asked to report it by calling 101. If you are Deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired text the non-emergency number on 07811 311 908.”

Mid and West Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Alun Lenny, Mayor of Carmarthen, said: “Quite shocking and graphic videos.

“This is always the danger when a large building (privately owned) is allowed to become derelict.

“I worked out of the tiny BBC radio studio in this very building from 1978-81, when the Public Analyst was based here. It is very historic.

“When the old workhouse was being trashed by the Rebecca Rioters in 1843, they were charged by the Light Dragoons – the last cavalry charge on mainland Britain.”
