TAKING advantage of a Welsh Water road closure that happened in Bronwydd, The Gwili Railway Company are set to replace the surface of the level cross at Bronwydd Arms Station.
Labour for the level crossing was completed by volunteers within eight days, and the cost of the project was covered by funds raised by this top Carmarthenshire heritage tourist attraction.
Matt Bowen, Company Secretary and Project Co-ordinator for the Abergwili Junction Extension, said: “The resurfacing of the level crossing is an important step towards opening the extended line and the determination and passion of the volunteers to see this project complete is inspiring.”
Alongside providing a much improved road surface for the villagers and users of the B4301, this is a step in the right direction to opening up the much anticipated extension south to Abergwili Junction near to Glangwili Hospital.
The extension to the line will see the familiar vintage Mark I coaches, steam and diesel locomotives and the heritage railcar using the crossing during the running season at this preserved railway.
Marketing Manager Juliet Fay stated: “Other heritage railways in the UK that have opened line extensions have seen visitor numbers increase by around 10%.
“We work closely with Discover Carmarthenshire and the Carmarthenshire Tourism Association and are thrilled to soon be providing even more reasons to visit our beautiful county.”
The extension will add two miles to the existing line, increasing the round trip from five miles to nine miles.
