YOUR VOTE MATTERS, USE IT
ON THURSDAY, May 5, Pembrokeshire goes to the polls.
It’s our chance to choose who represents us in County Hall for the next five years.
And those are important choices.
County and Community Councils contribute to and deliver the everyday services we all rely on.
However, it’s councillors who set the priorities for those services.
The Council has a budget set every year in response to the funding it gets for the Welsh Government.
The Welsh Government gives Councils leeway on what they spend and where they spend it.
It’s a battle to set a balanced budget that ensures the services you, your children, and the elderly and vulnerable need.
At the Community Council level, councillors allocate money to projects to enhance their home communities: sports fields, village hubs, and local amenities.
Think about your priorities: better schools, bin collections, times tips open, safer roads, a home.
Those things affect us all, and they must all be paid for every year.
And every year, it’s councillors who set those budgets.
They’re not Westminster or Cardiff Bay politicians seeking votes in the thousands or tens of thousands.
The margins are small.
That’s why your participation and your vote count.
A handful of votes here or there makes a massive difference.
In 2017, the last time Pembrokeshire went to the polls for Council elections, ten wards were won by fifty votes or less.
Of those, half were won by fewer than fifteen votes.
If you think your vote won’t count or won’t change things, you’re wrong.
If you don’t vote, it could be argued you don’t care.
But The Herald knows Pembrokeshire cares.
Every time we report on the Council, we see it from the responses those stories get.
Do not feel powerless to change things: you can.
If you’re one of those who constantly complain the Council is out of touch or ignores your views and the views of people like you, vote for a candidate you think will change things.
You don’t have to vote for a candidate who agrees with you on everything.
You don’t have to vote for a party.
But what you must do is vote for the candidate you think will do the best for you and the best for your communities.
Take a side.
Always take a side.
Sometimes, you will be wrong.
But if you refuse to take sides, you will always be wrong.
So take a side.
Put your X in a box and try to make a difference for everyone in your community.
It’s a small step and also a leap of faith.
Trust yourself.
Cast a vote.
Make a difference.
