Police dog subdued ‘bare-chested man’

A BARE-CHESTED man caught by police attempting to break into a house while ‘brandishing’ a shard of slate was subdued by a police dog and his handler last week.

Police were called to Brewery Street Carmarthen on Tuesday (Jul 10) after receiving reports of a disturbance.

Officers were confronted by 24-year-old Hafod Jones, who was bare-chested and confrontational. However, after seeing Police Dog Thor, a German Shepherd, he dropped the weapon and was arrested.

The Dyfed-Powys Police Dogs Team tweeted: “PD Thor and handler responded to reports of a male with a knife trying to break into a house in Carmarthen this afternoon.

“The team confronted a bare chested male brandishing what turned out to be a 10 inch long shard of slate.

“He saw that Thor meant business, dropped the object and surrendered.”

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police added that a 24-year-old male was arrested and later charged with criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and use of threatening behaviour with intent to cause fear.

He appeared in court on Wednesday, and was sentenced to a two-year community order featuring unpaid work and rehabilitation activity requirements, and was ordered to pay costs totalling £170.

Jones appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court the following day and entered guilty pleas to all charges. He was sentenced to a two-year community order, with 250 hours of unpaid work, alcohol dependency treatment, and 35 days of rehabilitation activity and ordered to pay costs of £170.
