A STARBUCKS drive-thru is set to open in Carmarthen.
The coffee giant has had plans approved to build a coffee shop within the current boundary of Morrisons car park, in the Pensarn area of the town.
The development, which will be approximately 1,800 square feet in size, will be accessible through the car park, with a ‘drive-thru lane’ going around the side and back of the shop itself.
It will be constructed in an area of the supermarket car park – next to the A484 which runs from Pensarn roundabout to Morrisons Petrol Station – that is away from the store’s entrance and not heavily used by customers.
While Starbucks already has an outlet inside the University of Wales Trinity St David campus in Carmarthen, this project will represent their first drive-thru establishment in the area.
It will also be Carmarthen’s first and only drive-thru coffee shop – with the nearest being a Costa Coffee outlet 12 miles east in Cross Hands.
The proposal – which has now been granted planning permission by Carmarthenshire Council subject to conditions relating to litter and the approval of a delivery management plan – was made by agents ELG Town Planning on behalf of Morrisons.
They say there is a call for such a development in Carmarthen and insist that it will not compete with or hinder any other coffee shops in the town.
On the application, they said: “There are a number of traditional high street café and coffee shop outlets within Carmarthen town centre, including national operators such as Costa and Caffe Nero.”
“However, there are currently no drive-thru coffee outlets within the town.
“The proposed drive-thru unit will primarily serve existing shoppers within the Pensarn Retail Park, employees and passing motorists on the A40 and A48.
“Such uses are now a common feature on established retail parks.
