Anglesey’s award-winning water safety initiative returns

HUNDERDS of Anglesey school pupils are set to receive vital water safety sessions as part of the latest ‘Swim Safe’ initiative.

Delivered by Môn Actif, Anglesey County Council’s leisure service, in partnership with Swim Wales, Swim Safe UK and the RNLI, the sessions began today (Monday, June 9th) at Trearddur Bay beach over nine days and Rhosneigr over 3 days.

Pupils from 23 primary schools across the Island will learn essential water safety skills through fun, engaging activities designed to help them stay safe in and around the water.

The initiative coincides with Drowning Prevention Week – one of the UK’s largest summer water safety campaigns – timed ahead of the school summer holidays when children spend more time outdoors and water safety skills are crucial.

Môn Actif’s continued commitment to water safety was recognised earlier this year as staff were presented with the 2024 ‘School Swimming and Water Safety Impact’ Award, by Swim Wales at their annual awards in Cardiff.

The award celebrated Môn Actif’s success in delivering Swim Safe sessions to over 500 local children during 2024 – teaching them essential water safety skills.

Môn Actif Sports Development Manager, Barry Edwards, said, “We’re proud to build on the success of past Swim Safe events to continue to educate young people on Anglesey about the importance of water safety.”

He added, “We’re grateful to the local schools for their ongoing support, and it’s fantastic to see so many schools from across the Island joining us in these fun safety sessions.”

Anglesey’s Leisure, Tourism, and Maritime Portfolio Holder, Councillor Neville Evans explained, “Living on an island, its vitally important to teach children how to swim safely and what to do if they find themselves in trouble in the water.”

“Once again, I am delighted to see the Swim Safe sessions take place here on Ynys Môn, and I thank Môn Actif and our partners for making these sessions both fun and educational for our children.”

He added, “These initiatives emphasise our continued commitment to keeping our children and young people safe.”

Môn Actif currently delivers school swimming lessons to over 40 primary schools on Anglesey, working to ensure that every Key Stage 2 pupil has the opportunity to learn how to swim and stay safe.
