CONWY County Borough Council has announced that Llandudno’s iconic Colonnade is set to undergo a major restoration thanks to a joint investment of £800,000 by the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund and the Welsh Government Brilliant Basics Fund.
The 170-metre covered walkway, which holds a prominent position overlooking Llandudno Bay, the Victorian Pier, and Promenade, is a cherished cultural asset. However, a recent structural report has revealed significant deterioration, placing the future of the Colonnade at risk without urgent intervention.
Work is due to start today (September 8), with local contractor Jennings appointed to carry out the restoration.
During the work there will be a road closure on Alex Munro Way with a diversion for access to the ski slope and for deliveries to the other businesses. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
This vital project will deliver extensive structural repairs to safeguard the Colonnade for generations to come. Works will include:
- Structural reinforcement and waterproofing
- Anti-carbonation coating
- Restoration and/or replacement of iron and steel balustrades
- Drainage improvements
- Installation of power and lighting
- Seating and interpretation panels
- A History Point tag offering voice and BSL interpretation
These enhancements will not only preserve the structure but also elevate the visitor experience, ensuring the Colonnade remains a vibrant and accessible part of Llandudno’s seafront.
