Former Conwy cabinet member ‘removed’ from independent group

A FORMER Conwy cabinet member has been “removed” from Conwy’s First Independent Group after it was revealed he had failed to declare membership of another party.

Last week leader Cllr Charlie McCoubrey announced Cllr Goronwy Edwards had resigned from his position as cabinet member for infrastructure, transport, and facilities after it was revealed he hadn’t declared membership of another party.

Yesterday Aberconwy MS Janet Finch-Saunders called the Caerhun councillor’s position “untenable”.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has been unable to contact Cllr Edwards.

In a statement issued today (Tuesday), Cllr McCoubrey commented: “I am writing to confirm that at a meeting held by the Conwy First Independent Group last night a decision was taken to remove Cllr Goronwy Edwards from the group.

“On behalf of the group we would like to record our thanks for all the work Cllr Goronwy has done over the years both for the group and the council as a whole.”

The controversy follows former Tories Cllr Louise Emery and Cllr Tom Montgomery jumping ship to Reform UK.

It was also revealed last week that independent councillor David Carr was a member of Reform, which was rightly declared on his register of interests.
