Council plans car park at Llangollen cemetery after residents’ complaints

A COUNCIL is planning to build a car park at Llangollen cemetery after residents complained about traffic issues.

Andrew Ford of Denbighshire County Council has applied to the council’s planning department, seeking approval for the proposals on Vicarage Road. The site is described as a green field with an access road to the west and hedges to the east and north boundaries.

According to the application, residents living near the cemetery have complained about council workers parking on the road.

If granted, the car park will be sited adjacent to the northern boundary off Vicarage Road, accommodating 11 cars, including one disabled bay.

The plans, though, will mean some hedge removal, with one sycamore tree also needing to be felled, but the council says it will plant three replacement trees and wildflower as part of mitigation measures.

Bat boxes will also be located within the existing trees to the south of the site.

A planning statement said: “Llangollen cemetery does not currently have car parking or access for the funeral directors. Parking has always been single file on the access road / path to the west.

“DCC Streetscene cemetery services park their van, trailer, and mini digger on the road at the front of the cemetery, which then causes issues for the residents.”

The statement added: “The car park will be used by funeral attendees, members of the public visiting graves, and Denbighshire’s Streetscene cemetery services.”

The council says access will be provided to both vehicles and pedestrians, with “tactile paving crossing” proposed on Vicarage Road.

The plans will likely be discussed at a future Denbighshire County Council planning committee meeting at Ruthin’s County Hall HQ.
