Sam Rowlands MS supports nationwide road safety campaign in North Wales

SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is backing a four week campaign to raise awareness of dangerous road behaviours.

North Wales Police is supporting a nationwide road safety campaign running throughout July. It is being led by the National Police Chief’s Council and will see officers carrying out a combination of enforcement activity as well as engagement and educational work aimed at raising awareness of the most common and dangerous road behaviours, including:

  • Driving whilst under the influence of drink and/or drugs
  • Speeding
  • Using a mobile phone at the wheel
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Careless driving

Mr Rowlands said: “I am always happy to support any initiatives and add my voice for calls to keep us all safe on our roads.

“You are not only putting your own life at risk but you are a danger to other road users and pedestrians.

“It is also a sad fact that motorists do drive when they have had a drink or taken drugs and I fully support any crackdown on this sort of behaviour.”

Sergeant Chris Evans of North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit said: “Our message is simple – take care on the roads. The consequences of not doing so are potentially deadly to you, your passengers and other road users.

Over recent days officers from the Roads Crime Unit have issued several tickets for offences such as driving whilst using a mobile phone, speeding and driving without insurance. Several drink and drug drive arrests have also been made.

Chief Inspector Rob Rands from the Force’s Operational Support Services said: “Every fatality on our roads is a tragedy, that is why we are committed to keeping the roads safe and will continue to act against those who commit offences on our roads.

“The fatal five offences are all incredibly dangerous and selfish. These acts not only put the driver’s life at risk but also risks the lives of passengers, pedestrians and law-abiding motorists.

“Laws are in place for a reason – to keep you safe. Please follow these laws and drive to the conditions of the road. We are about to see a huge influx of visitors into the region so we all need to be as safe as possible.

“We make no apology for stopping drivers who are committing a fatal five offence – please heed the warning.”
