COLEG CAMBRIA’S YALE Campus in Wrexham hosted an exciting ‘Careers in Screen’ event on Tuesday (February 10), bringing together leading industry professionals to inspire young people across North Wales about careers in the screen industries.

Delivered through the Discover! Creative Careers Cymru programme, led by leading education charity Into Film Cymru, the day offered an opportunity for local students to hear from acclaimed Welsh actor and director Celyn Jones, who recently directed Rupert Everett, Callum Scott Howells and Ruby Stokes in upcoming historical drama ‘Madfabulous’ about Henry, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey.

Students from Coleg Cambria and local schools including St Joseph’s Catholic & Anglican High School, Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, and Ysgol Bryn Alyn also took part in hands-on sessions covering everything from gaming, special effects, screenwriting, prop making, and TV show design.

Keynote speaker, actor/director Celyn Jones told students: “Events like this demonstrate what’s possible when we invest in education and outreach.

“Every young person has potential, and by connecting them with industry professionals and showing them the diverse pathways into film, television and digital media, we can help them discover where their talents can take them.

“As an Into Film Cymru Ambassador, I’m delighted to be part of this event at Coleg Cambria because it’s vitally important that young people across the country understand the breadth of opportunities available to them.

“The future of Welsh storytelling depends on inspiring and supporting the talent of today.”

Non Stevens, Head of Into Film Cymru, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing this event to Wrexham and partnering with Coleg Cambria. Events like this are vital in showing young people the incredible range of opportunities available in the screen industries.

“Through Discover! Creative Careers Cymru, we’re connecting students directly with industry professionals and giving them hands-on experience of different roles.

“From gaming to sustainability, from special effects to screenwriting, these workshops will demonstrate just how diverse and exciting the creative industries can be.

“We look forward to delivering even more opportunities before March 2026.”

The event aims to showcase the diverse career pathways available in the creative industries and provide valuable networking opportunities for young people. Industry professionals leading the workshops include Mia Fisk (special effects), David Moorhead (screenwriting), Jon Williams (props making), and Hollie Abbot (TV show design).

Year 13 student Amber, from Coleg Cambria, said: “I’ve come today not sure what to expect to be honest. But it’s been really great – I had no idea there were so many different jobs I could do.

“Hearing about how all these professionals got into the industry has been a real eye opener, and hearing them talk has got me thinking. I’ve always loved films, and I really can see me working behind the scenes.”

The Discover! Creative Careers Cymru programme aims to help thousands of young people across Wales explore careers in the creative industries, connecting them with industry professionals and providing practical experience of different roles within the sector.

It is part of a UK-wide campaign, funded by UK Government, which has seen over 80,000 young people inspired by creative careers. See the 2025 highlights film featuring highlights from Wales.
