Sam Rowlands MS calls for support for new rail link

SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, calls on Welsh Minister to back proposals for the proposed direct rail link from Wrexham to London.

Mr Rowlands was speaking in the Senedd, during a discussion on transport links for Wrexham during this years National Eisteddfod.

He said: “People in North Wales, and Wrexham in particular, are very excited about the Eisteddfod coming to their patch in the summer. Beyond the summer we want to continue to see major events in Wrexham because it’s such a welcoming place, but there are challenges around some of the transport links there.

“You will be aware, Cabinet Secretary, of proposals from Wrexham, Shropshire & Midlands Railway, WSMR, in relation to a direct rail link from Wrexham train station through to London, which opens up Wrexham beyond its locality, to attract more visitors, and hopefully attract more events into the area, supporting the local economy.

“You will also be aware that it’s making good progress, and I wonder whether you would be able to put your voice of support to that project, so that we can see that direct rail link much more regular, much more accessible to people from Wrexham through to London.”

Ken Skates Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales said he was supportive of more rail services that better connect communities and had spoken with a number of organisations this week about that very initiative.

Mr Rowlands, a keen supporter of improving transport links in North-East Wales added: “I am really delighted to hear that the Cabinet Secretary is supportive of the proposal as the city continues to attract visitors from far and wide it really is essential that this sort of public transport is available.

“With the new Labour Government failing to commit to the last Conservative Government’s planned investment in the North Wales mainline it is absolutely vital that everything possible is done to improve rail services for the people in my region.”
