17-year-old handed Billie Jean King Cup singles matches against Australia
THE 17-YEAR-OLD, selected by GB captain Anne Keothavong, has been named alongside Harriet Dart for this week’s qualifier against Australia, which will be played at the John Cain Arena in Melbourne.
Stojsavljevic is scheduled to play two singles matches, facing Talia Gibson on Friday and Kimberly Birrell on Saturday. The Australian pair are currently ranked 56 and 80 in the world respectively, while Stojsavljevic sits at 275, making her the current British number eight.
The youngster impressed Welsh tennis fans during October’s Lexus Wrexham Open at the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, where she reached the final without dropping a set. She was eventually beaten by Welsh ace Mimi Xu in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 600 spectators.
Her strong run in North Wales helped propel her up the world rankings and has now been rewarded with her first senior call-up.
Lexus Wrexham Open promoter Dave Courteen said: “It’s exciting news that Mika has been handed the opportunity to make her Billie Jean King Cup debut for Great Britain just six months after playing so consistently well in Wrexham.
“It’s no surprise that the level of her tennis has now earned her a fully deserved place in the GB team competing in Melbourne.
“It’s fantastic for Mika to have the chance to play against two higher ranked Australian players, and we wish Mika and her team mates every success.”
The Lexus Wrexham Open replaced the Lexus W100 tournament in Shrewsbury on the LTA Performance Competitions Calendar. Several of Stojsavljevic’s team-mates have previously played in the event when it was held in Shropshire.
Harriet Dart won the doubles title in Shrewsbury in both 2017 and 2023, while fellow GB team member Katie Swan was on the losing side in the 2017 doubles final. Jodie Burrage, also part of the squad in Melbourne, has competed in the tournament on several occasions, most recently in 2024.
Organisers have confirmed the 2026 Lexus Wrexham Open will take place between October 18 and 25, again hosted on the indoor courts at the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre. It is expected to be the largest women’s tennis tournament held in the UK this year outside the LTA grass court season.
