Port Talbot graduate builds a new career for himself

AFTER MORE THAN a decade working in the construction industry, University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) graduate, Niki Hunwick has successfully carved out a new professional path as a graduate Quantity Surveyor – a transformation shaped by determination and a commitment to personal growth.

Now established in his new career as a graduate Quantity Surveyor, Niki reflects with pride on how far he has come, saying: “While my academic journey wasn’t linear or straightforward, it reflects steady progression driven by determination and a desire to develop professionally.”

Growing up in Port Talbot, Niki began his career as an apprentice carpenter before gaining hands‑on experience across the construction sector. Over time, he felt a growing pull toward a new challenge and the opportunity to progress. In 2022, he made the bold decision to return to education.

But applying to university wasn’t without its uncertainties. Earlier difficulties at school had affected his confidence.

Niki said: “University wasn’t something I imagined myself completing,” he said. “But on a personal level, I wanted to achieve something I never thought I would.”

Graduating in 2025 from UWTSD – and becoming the first in his family to enter higher education – was a milestone that brought deep personal meaning.

Niki chose the Quantity Surveying (BSc) course because it aligned with both his interests and his practical background. Its analytical approach to costs, contracts, and structured problem-solving allowed him to bring his industry experience into a new and ambitious direction.

During his studies, he sought tailored support after experiencing difficulties with academic writing and concentration. Assessment confirmed dyslexia and highlighted ADHD traits.

He said: “The support I received was above and beyond what I expected. It played a major role in my success.”

He also accessed additional wellbeing and financial support when challenges arose.

He explained: “By being open about my difficulties and asking for help, I was able to work to the best of my ability.”

Niki specialised in sustainable construction and wrote his dissertation on the potential use of smart contracts in the industry – a project that sparked a strong interest in digital construction and future technologies. He now aims to build on this foundation by working toward RICS chartership and deepening his expertise in digital innovation.

Reflecting on his journey, Niki said: “The course has changed how I see myself and what I believe I’m capable of. I’m more confident, more patient with myself, and more willing to keep learning.”
