Everything you need to know about the Barry Island 10K

06.08.23 - ABP Barry Island 10k -

A SELL-OUT crowd of over 4,300 runners will descend on the seafront this Sunday for the return of the Barry Island 10K.

Back for its fifth edition after a year’s break, the race promises a festival atmosphere at one of Wales’ most iconic seaside locations—made famous by BBC’s Gavin & Stacey. It’s the second event in the 2025 R4W 10K Series.

The scenic but challenging course was designed by Olympic marathon runner Steve Brace and takes in many of Barry’s most recognisable landmarks, including Whitmore Bay, Romilly Park and the Knap.

Event timings

The main 10K race starts at 10:00am. Runners should arrive early, with pens opening at 9:45am.

Family-friendly events take place later in the day:

  • 12:15pm – Toddler Dash (for children under 3)
  • 12:30pm – Future Challengers (1-mile youth race)
  • 1:00pm – Family Fun Run

The route

The race begins on the promenade, loops through Barry’s retail area, around the Barry Docks Offices, and up the steep Subway Road incline. From there, it heads past Barry Station and into Romilly Park. Runners will enjoy sweeping views of the Bristol Channel and Porthkerry Country Park around the 6K mark before passing the Knap and climbing The Parade. The final stretch features cheering crowds, a loop around the amusement centre, and a fast downhill finish near Friars Road.

Getting there and road closures

Road closures will be in place from early morning, and runners are urged to arrive at their pre-booked parking by 8:30am to avoid delays. Options include park and ride or park and walk, all available via the official website: barryisland.co.uk/travel-parking

Additional Transport for Wales trains from Cardiff Central will arrive in time for the race, with services at 7:54am, 8:09am, and 8:29am.
