A DERELICT site in the Bridgend county village of Tondu is set to be transformed with the development of 35 affordable homes.

Located on the former Glan Yr Afon Care Home site on Heol-Yr-Ysgol the new properties will be built by Bridgend-based housing association Valleys to Coast.

The work will be done to the brownfield site opposite Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen, with funding from Bridgend County Borough Council and the Welsh Government’s social housing grant.

Once completed the £8.2m project will see a housing site made up of a mixture of 24 one-bedroom flats and 11 two-to-four-bedroom houses used for social rent.

Speaking of the plans a recent Valleys to Coast report said: “All of the ground-floor flats will have level-access bathrooms to suit residents with limited mobility.

“The homes will prioritise high energy performance, low carbon emissions, and improved air quality.

“This ‘fabric first’ approach will help residents save money by keeping their utility costs low.

“Valleys to Coast has committed to an ambitious growth strategy focused on providing more high-quality, affordable homes in and around Bridgend.”

James Griffiths, managing director of development and regeneration at Valleys to Coast, added: “Safe, warm, and dry homes are fundamental to our wellbeing and sense of security.

“We’re proud to be delivering 35 high-quality and affordable homes helping future residents build stable and comfortable lives for themselves in Bridgend.”

The Tondu development is now expected to be completed by August 2026.

It comes just months after a meeting where council bosses discussed potential changes to their social housing allocation policy.

Here they were told by officers there are currently more than 3,000 households on the common housing register in Bridgend with demand for accommodation outstripping what is available.
