Bridgend man prepares for gruelling 12-mile Bristol Channel swim for dementia charity

26-year-old to take on one of the UK’s toughest endurance challenges in honour of his grandfather

A BRIDGEND man is preparing to take on a demanding 12-mile swim across the Bristol Channel in aid of Dementia UK.

Aeron Davies, 26, is planning the challenge for summer 2026, inspired by his grandfather’s diagnosis with dementia.

The Bristol Channel crossing is widely considered one of the toughest endurance swims in the UK, with swimmers facing strong tidal currents, cold water temperatures, and the need to keep going for several hours without stopping.

Mr Davies has already begun an intensive training programme to build the strength and stamina needed to complete the crossing.

“The distance itself is significant, but it’s the conditions that make it particularly demanding — cold water, strong tides, and the need to keep going for several hours without stopping,” he said.

Speaking about his motivation, Mr Davies added: “My grandfather has always been someone who worked hard and stayed positive. Seeing that continue despite dementia has been incredibly inspiring.”

Through the swim, he hopes to raise money for Dementia UK while also increasing awareness of the impact the condition has on families and the importance of support services.
