HANNAH NORMAN, 22, from Bridgend, has completed her first ever Cardiff Half Marathon, running in support of British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cymru — the charity that helped her family through one of the most challenging chapters of their lives.
Hannah’s journey to the start line began with a deeply personal connection to the British Heart Foundation. At just three years old, her younger sister underwent open heart surgery at just nine months old. Leah, 20, was diagnosed with Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a type of congenital heart disease, when a blood vessel in your heart does not close by itself after you’re born. The experience shaped Hannah’s childhood and left a lasting impression.

Hannah said: “I spent so much of my younger life in hospital with her. I didn’t really understand the tubes or what was happening — I just knew I had to be careful around her.”
The British Heart Foundation provided vital support to Hannah’s family during that time.
She said: “They kept my parents grounded and gave them hope. There was always someone to talk to, someone who understands.”
After the loss of her grandfather earlier this year, Hannah found herself needing a new focus. Signing up for the Cardiff Half Marathon gave her purpose.
She explained: “I saw the Cardiff Half and thought, ‘Why not?. It was a no-brainer. This was the perfect opportunity to give back.”
Despite being new to running, Hannah trained with determination and heart. “I always thought running wasn’t for me — I’m a plus-size girl and didn’t think I’d fit in,” she admitted. “But I’ve learned that anyone can run. You just need a pair of trainers. It’s not exclusive — it’s for everyone.”
On race day, Hannah was cheered on by her sister — now a university student — and inspired by her 15-month-old son.
Hannah said: “I want him to be proud. He doesn’t understand now, but one day I want him to be able to say, ‘That’s my mum.’”
Crossing the finish line was a moment of triumph, reflection, and pride.
She said: “I did it!. Every step was for my sister, my grandfather, and for the families who need support like we did. It was emotional, empowering — and just the beginning.”
Rhodri Thomas, Head of BHF Cymru, said: “We are so proud of Hannah, and all our runners at this years’ Cardiff Half Marathon for their commitment to our cause.
“The sad reality is that each month, around 800 families in Wales will lose a loved one to cardiovascular conditions like a heart attack and stroke, and it’s people like Hannah that will bring us closer to the day that everyone has a healthier heart for longer. Diolch o galon.”
Hannah has raised more than £500 for the charity, and now has her sights set on even bigger challenges, including an Iron Man event.
Hannah ended: “I’ve started endurance training and I’d love to fundraise for BHF Cymru again.”
Hannah’s story is a powerful reminder that with heart, community, and determination, anything is possible.
