MORE than £200,000 is set to go towards projects like repairing footpaths, replacing signs and refurbishing bus shelters in Bridgend County Borough.
It comes as the local authority is set to receive funding worth a total of £228,000 as part of the Welsh Government’s Tidy Towns Fund, which will provide around £5 million to communities across Wales.
As well as being used for general repairs to footpaths signs and bus shelters it will also go towards painting murals and removing litter, as well as clearing fly-tipping and overgrown areas.
It is intended to complement Welsh Government’s £100 million Transforming Towns programme, which turns underused, empty or run-down properties into businesses, housing, leisure, or community facilities.
The latest fund was announced at the Welsh Labour conference in June to help restore “pride of place” to people in Wales.
Each local authority in Wales will receive a share of the cash in order to carry out similar works.
Councillor John Spanswick, who is the leader of Bridgend County Borough council said: “We welcome this additional funding from Welsh Government, which we are looking to put into cleaning up areas in our communities.
“This will include areas that may have become overgrown and unsightly over a period of time and bring them back into a regular maintenance programme.”
Jayne Bryant, Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, added: “The fund complements our existing Transforming Towns programme which is delivering regeneration projects right across Wales.
“Tidy Towns will help restore pride of place and strengthen that sense of belonging and fulfilment that the places we call home bring our communities every day.”
