BRIDGEND Council is set to consider the potential for opening a new care facility in the borough following a recent review of its accommodation-based services.

The report which was heard by council bosses at a meeting on Tuesday, March 11, was given to show what work is being done with its residential care and adult placement services, as well as what could be done to develop and improve them in the coming years.

The review focused on the borough’s care homes and extra care services as well as identifying what they said were a number of service gaps after data was reviewed by council officers.

These included services for residents with complex or lifelong care needs with a noted requirement for “input and involvement from a Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board” – with an additional need for supported living services to be developed further.

Speaking at the meeting, officers also said they would begin looking at long-term proposals for the creation of a fourth care facility in the borough with a “robust” full business case being required to take the idea further.

The report read: “In the longer-term, we need to assess the feasibility for developing a fourth extra care housing service, which will have both capital and revenue funding implications and therefore will be subject to a robust business case.

“This will involve having conversations with registered social landlords and internal colleagues about upcoming development opportunities, where all funding opportunities will need to be explored.”

Members also approved a five year extension for works with the Vale of Glamorgan council to provide long-term placements or short breaks with a host family known as the Shared Lives placement scheme – with the hope being to extend this service to more groups in the future.

They added they were satisfied there were enough options for residents with advanced dementia in the borough after the recent opening of a nursing home, with a future priority to make sure local care homes and accommodations are dementia-friendly environments.
