THE DEVELOPMENT Control committee of Bridgend County Borough Council will meet at 10am today (July 31) to consider proposals for delivering the first new schools to be built in the Cornelly area in more than 40 years.
A special meeting of the committee will take place to deliver a decision on plans for providing an all-new, state of the art modern English-medium primary school which would replace the ageing Corneli and Afon Y Felin Primary Schools located within the area.
If approved, the new school would feature a two-form entry system for almost 500 pupils, including a 60-place nursery and a 15-place resource centre for pupils with additional learning needs, as well as a playing field and a multi-use games area.
The Development Control committee will also be asked to consider plans for providing all-new premises for Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr, which would expand onto the current site occupied by Corneli Primary School to become a bigger, two-form entry school.
If approved, this would be capable of hosting 420 pupils along with a 60-place Welsh-medium nursery, and would also feature facilities including a playing field and multi-use games area. An existing Integrated Children’s Centre currently located on the Corneli Primary School site would remain in place.
Because a consultation period is still underway over proposed changes to the bus drop-off and pick-up area at the expanded school, the committee will be asked to deliver a resolution which will be subject to the condition that no new or further material objections are received which require consideration.
