Plans approved for two new schools in the Cornelly area

Afon Y Felin Primary School

PLANS to deliver the first new schools to be built in the Cornelly area in more than 40 years have been approved by the Development Control committee of Bridgend County Borough Council.

A special meeting of the committee heard how Bridgend County Borough Council wants to replace the ageing Corneli and Afon Y Felin primary schools with an all-new, state of the art modern English-medium primary school featuring a two-form entry system for almost 500 pupils, a 60-place nursery, a 15-place resource centre for pupils with additional learning needs, a playing field, a multi-use games area and more.

The Development Control committee also agreed plans for providing all-new premises for Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr, which would expand onto the current site occupied by Corneli Primary School to become a bigger, two-form entry school capable of hosting 420 pupils along with a 60-place Welsh-medium nursery and facilities such as a playing field and multi-use games area.

Because a consultation period is still underway over proposed changes to the bus drop-off and pick-up area at the expanded school, the committee was asked to deliver a resolution which is subject to the condition that no new or further material objections are received that require consideration.

An existing Integrated Children’s Centre currently located on the Corneli Primary School site will remain in place.

Councillor Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services, said: “These plans represent a fantastic opportunity to provide the local community with new, fully modernised schools which will benefit generations of Welsh and English medium pupils alike.

“As these will be the first new schools to be built within the area in almost four decades, they also represent a multi-million pound investment into the local community, and demonstrate the council’s ongoing commitment towards providing local children with the best modern learning environments possible.

“I wholly support the decision to develop these much-needed new educational facilities, and I am looking forward to work starting and watching them take shape.”
