THE INQUEST into the sudden death of Senedd Member Hefin David has been opened in Gwent.
Dr David, aged 47, represented Caerphilly in the Senedd since 2016. He died earlier this month, prompting widespread tributes from colleagues across the political spectrum.
At a brief hearing held on Tuesday (Aug 26), the coroner confirmed that the inquest into his death had formally been opened. A full hearing will take place at a later date, once further evidence has been gathered, including toxicology results.
Dr David’s passing led to shock and sadness both locally and nationally. Welsh Labour figures described him as a tireless campaigner for his constituents and a dedicated family man. First Minister Eluned Morgan said she was “heartbroken” at the loss, while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised his “deep commitment to public service”.
The death of Dr David means a by-election will be held in Caerphilly in the coming weeks, with details to be confirmed by the Senedd authorities.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
