Adrenaline junkies are once again taking to the skies above Cardiff as zip-lining makes its long-awaited return to the Principality Stadium.
The high-octane attraction, which allows visitors to soar across the 60-metre-high roof, marks the arrival of Welsh adventure company Zip World, which has officially taken over operations at the iconic venue. The firm is now offering roof walks, abseiling experiences, and zip lines, with the promise of “more adrenaline-filled experiences” to follow.
Zip-lining first arrived at the stadium in April 2024, allowing visitors to climb the side of the national landmark for £44, or combine the ascent with a rooftop walk and abseil descent for £89. However, the previous operator’s contract came to an end over the summer, leading to the attraction’s closure.
At the time, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), which owns the stadium, described the pause as temporary and hinted at “exciting news” to come. That promise has now been fulfilled with the launch of Zip World’s new venture, which opened to the public on Friday, 31 October.
In its most recent annual report, the WRU listed £3.9 million in capital expenditure for the “construction and development of the scale roof walk adventure experience”, reflecting its ambitions to create a major visitor attraction at the site.
However, earlier this year, WRU chairman Richard Collier-Keywood told BusinessLive that the previous version had been underperforming, saying it delivered “nowhere near the projections we had hoped for.”
Zip World, which operates a number of popular adventure sites across Wales, including the world’s fastest zip line at Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda, now hopes to inject fresh energy into the capital’s newest sky-high experience.
With the partnership now in place, the Principality Stadium looks set to re-establish itself not only as the home of Welsh rugby, but also as one of the nation’s most exhilarating adventure destinations.
