Cardiff site manager recognised as one of the best in the UK for the fourth time

GERAINT Thomas, senior site manager for leading partnerships developer Lovell, has won a NHBC (National House Building Council) Pride in the Job Quality Award for the fourth year.

Geraint Thomas has been selected from a field of more than 8,000 site managers and is one of 449 to be awarded the accolade for their work, representing the top five percent of UK site managers. Geraint has now received four Quality Awards, after also winning in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

As the most highly regarded competition in the industry, the Pride in the Job Awards have been running for 44 years and celebrate site managers who have achieved the very highest standards in house building, ensuring high-quality homes are delivered on time, on safe sites and to exacting construction standards.

Each site manager was evaluated on their consistency, attention to detail, technical expertise, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specification, and health and safety skills.

Geraint works as a senior site manager at the The Mill development in Canton, Cardiff – Wales’ largest regeneration project, providing a total of 800 mixed-tenure homes. The final phase of the affordable homes programme is nearing completion and will see 154 affordable properties delivered for rent through Tirion Homes and Cadwyn, including 105 high rise apartments, 49 homes and five retail units.

Geraint said: “Following my time at The Mill since joining the company in 2019, I have had the best support from Lovell, and the technical and commercial teams have been on point.

“The final phase of The Mill has been the most challenging and rewarding, as it consists of a mixture of 105 high rise apartments, 49 homes and five retail units. I couldn’t have done any of this on my own, the construction team around me are phenomenal and each have contributed by bringing their experiences to the table. This has been a major part in the success of The Mill.”

James Duffett, regional managing director at Lovell, said: “At Lovell we take a lot of pride in building our developments to the highest standards, so I am exceptionally proud that Geraint has been awarded a Pride in the Job Quality Award for the fourth time.

“Geraint is a fantastic site manager, who has been successfully leading his team through the construction of the major The Mill development since he joined Lovell in 2019. His passion and commitment to delivering high-quality new homes never goes unnoticed, and his fourth Quality Award is very deserved.”

Commenting on the awards, Steve Wood, CEO at NHBC said: “For more than four decades, Pride in the Job has underpinned NHBC’s purpose of raising standards in house building. The competition recognises the UK’s top site managers, showcasing best practice and rewarding excellence.

“Winning site managers demonstrate dedication, passion and leadership to ensure new homes are delivered to exacting construction quality standards. While house building is a team effort, we believe the greatest influence on the quality of a finished home is the calibre of the site manager and the way they inspire their team. Congratulations to all the winners.”

The Quality Award winners will now go on to compete for the Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards, which will be announced in autumn. The national Supreme Awards will then be revealed in January 2025.

The Mill includes 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell, which have sold out, and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association – for Tirion Homes. The scheme is going ahead with the support of the Welsh Government and financial backing from the Principality Building Society, and is being developed by Tirion Homes in partnership with Lovell.
