Watching the football, or more recently, the rugby World Cup, down the pub with a pint is a time-honoured British tradition, and to make sure punters are getting the best experience, a recent study analysed over 3700 UK pubs to determine which is the best for sports fans.
The study, by TV and electrical retailer Currys, scored pubs out of an overall 50, against factors such as the average price of a pint in the area, the number of screens, the availability of a big screen, anti-social behaviour figures per postcode and more to give an ultimate list of the best UK sports pubs.
Welsh sports pubs that made the top 25 list
The best sports bar in Wales is The Philharmonic Cardiff. It ranks 15th overall with 35.71 points out of 50. Claiming to be the ‘ultimate party celebration’ on their website, it’s a three-floor venue with 16 screens, including two large ones and an outdoor screen showing live sporting action with commentary. For all sports fans, they offer reservations in front of the TV for all major games. With a pint priced at an acceptable £4 in the area, it’s no surprise that the pub is ranked as the best in Wales.
The second-best pub in Wales is The Pontcanna Inn in Cardiff. It landed 23rd on the list of all sports bars in the UK with an overall score of 35.43. The pub airs live sports from TNT and Sky Sports channels on their six screens, and it’s probably the best place for cricket fans as it’s the official pub partner of the Glamorgan County Cricket Club. Although 23rd is not usually a position to shout about, out of over 3700 pubs it is definitely something The Pontcanna Inn should be proud of.
These two Welsh pubs are the only ones that made it to not only to the top 25, but also the top 100 list of the best sports bars in the UK.
