Debate Mate launches 2025/2026 programme for Cardiff Schools; empowering next generation of leaders

CARDIFF’S young people are set to embark on a transformative journey as the Debate Mate programme officially launched its 2025/2026 season this week at Cardiff University Business School, bringing together students from nine Cardiff secondary schools for 17 weeks of learning, challenge, and growth.

The event was marked by an inspiring address from Councillor Huw Thomas, the Leader of Cardiff Council, who underscored the city’s commitment to empowering young people with the skills needed for success in school, work, and life.

He said: “More than just a debating competition, Debate Mate is a platform for developing confidence, teamwork, and communication – skills that are increasingly sought after by Cardiff’s fastest-growing industries, including Fintech, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Financial Services”

“With Cardiff’s continued growth and the arrival of major employers like Rolls Royce Submarines, the city is poised for new opportunities. Debate Mate ensures that local students are ready to seize these opportunities, preparing them for interviews, university, and future careers.”

A global programme which aims to raise aspirations and empower young people to find their voice, Debate Mate was first launched in Cardiff in 2021 with the support of FinTech Wales and Cardiff Council’s Economic Development team. The programme’s real-world focus connects students with professionals and mentors, offering opportunities to debate in boardrooms, network with industry leaders, and present solutions to real-world challenges.

Cardiff’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education added: “Debate Mate is about giving our young people the tools to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

“The skills developed here – confidence, teamwork, and clear communication are exactly what Cardiff’s growing industries are looking for.

“Debate Mate is about more than winning trophies—it’s about finding your voice, building confidence, and preparing for the world beyond school.

“As students progress through the programme, they will have the chance to represent Cardiff at the Principality Stadium and even at the national final in London.

“I’m proud to see so many of our schools taking part and look forward to seeing the impact these young debaters will have on our city’s future.”

Last year, over 100 pupils from eight Cardiff secondary schools participated in Debate Mate and saw measurable improvement in debating skills, including structuring arguments, responding to challenges, and using persuasive techniques – core competencies valued by employers.

Key highlights included:

  • 100% of teachers agreed their students gained confidence.
  • 90% of students reported improved empathy and consideration for others.
  • 83% felt more comfortable expressing opinions on current events and political issues.
  • 82% identified enhanced leadership qualities in themselves and peers.
  • Across the UK, there was a 71% increase in students strongly agreeing, “I feel like what I say matters.”
