CARDIFF FOODBANK has launched The Great Summer Street Collection, encouraging residents across Cardiff to organise food collections where they live to help the charity that provides emergency food and support to people in crisis.
This June, Cardiff residents are being invited to become local foodraisers by sharing the food bank’s most-needed items list with neighbours and acting as a collection point for donated goods.
In 2025, Cardiff Foodbank provided 19,203 three-day emergency parcels for people in crisis. The initiative has been specifically developed to alleviate the seasonal drop in donations that the charity experiences. The Great Summer Street Collection aims to restock the warehouse shelves that supply emergency food and other essential items to the 12 food bank sessions held across the city each week.
Collection point posters are popping up in house windows across Cardiff, with more than 50 streets already signed up to support the foodraiser.
One Roath resident has already set up her street collection and has even encouraged work colleagues to donate.
Speaking about why she has volunteered to be a foodraiser, Helen Williams said: “I want to help the Great Summer Street Collection for Cardiff Foodbank as no one should be worried about where their next meal is coming from.
“By giving a little of my time and effort, I hope to make a real difference to our community. Any one of us could end up in a situation where we need their help.”
Cardiff Foodbank Fundraising Officer Annie Hillman, said: “This is the first year of running this foodraiser and we’re delighted to see how enthusiastic people have been to support us.
“We’ve had some really good feedback from people saying not only that they are supporting a great cause but also that it’s been a lovely excuse to catch up with neighbours – and to meet new ones.
“We realise that the residential streets and roads across Cardiff are vastly different, from small cul-de-sac’s to long main roads. We want people to take on this challenge in a way that works for them.
“Some people are happier scaling down their donation requests to just a section of their road and that is perfectly fine. We really appreciate all the support.
“We’re also keen to make it as easy as possible to take part in. We can help with digital or printed shopping lists – in English or Welsh – featuring our 30 most needed items, and we can also lend foldable, stackable crates to store the donations in a neat and orderly way.
