Aberdare woman marks 100th birthday after raising thousands for children’s charity
A RETIRED consultant gynaecologist who has spent decades raising money for vulnerable children has been honoured as she celebrated her 100th birthday.
Dorothy Gratton-Kertesz, from Aberdare, marked the milestone with a special celebration at Green Street Methodist Church on Sunday, May 31, surrounded by family, friends and members of the local community.
Dorothy, who enjoyed a distinguished medical career, is also well known for her long-standing support of children’s charity Action for Children, helping to raise thousands of pounds over the years through community fundraising events.
Each summer, she has opened her home and gardens to visitors, hosting gatherings, bring-and-buy sales and afternoon events that have become a popular fixture in the local calendar.
Her home baking, hospitality and commitment to helping others have earned her widespread admiration, with many crediting her efforts for inspiring generations of volunteers and supporters.
Reflecting on her centenary, Dorothy said helping others had always been important to her.
“I have always believed in giving back where I can,” she said.
“It has been such a joy to bring people together each summer, and I feel very lucky to have shared so many happy occasions while supporting causes that matter.
“Reaching 100 is very special, but being able to help others along the way is what has meant the most to me.”
Action for Children paid tribute to Dorothy’s dedication, describing her as an exceptional supporter whose fundraising has made a real difference to the lives of children and families.
Katherine Woods, the charity’s Director of Fundraising, said: “Reaching 100 is extraordinary, but it’s Dorothy’s lifetime of generosity and compassion that truly stands out.
“Her unwavering support – through fundraising events, opening her home, and bringing people together – has helped countless children grow up safe, supported and able to thrive.
“We are hugely grateful and wish her a very happy 100th birthday.”
Friends and supporters say Dorothy’s commitment to both her profession and her charitable work has left a lasting legacy in the community, with her fundraising efforts continuing to benefit children across Wales and beyond.
As she celebrates her centenary year, Dorothy remains an inspiration to all who know her, proving that community spirit and kindness can make a difference at any age.
