THERE were 2,000 people in attendance at Merthyr Tydfil’s first Day Fever festival in the town centre.
On Saturday, June 28, Penderyn Square transformed into a vibrant party hub drawing in 2,000 for an 80s festival that was the first of its kind in the town.
The event was made possible through funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund Programme, Welsh Government’s Event Wales Grant and Merthyr Tydfil Council.
Council leader, Councillor Brent Carter, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the overwhelming success of the Day Fever Festival.
“It was amazing to see our town come alive with music, laughter, and a sense of community. The festival has not only put our town on the map but has also brought our residents together, fostering a sense of belonging and pride.
“We’re grateful for the support from the Welsh Government and UK Government, which made this incredible event possible.”

The festival was a throwback in its entertainment, boasting an all-star line-up that included local boy, Jonny Owen and his wife, Vicky McClure, Amelle formerly of the Sugababes, The Electric 80s UK Live Band, Bradley from S Club 7 and Tiffany.
There was also a fringe festival with local performers which took place throughout the town centre and was free.
The council said the impact of the event was palpable with a significant increase in footfall in the town centre, adding that the town was “filled with a renewed sense of vitality and excitement.”
Cllr Carter said: “It was incredible to see our town buzzing with energy and life.
“The Day Fever Festival has shown us the power of community and the importance of investing in events that bring people together. We can’t wait to build on this momentum and create even more unforgettable experiences for our residents and visitors.”
