Torfaen develops blueprint for net zero carbon emissions by 2050

TORFAEN is making significant strides towards reducing its carbon emissions and achieving net zero status by 2050. A Local Area Energy Plan is currently being developed to outline the path towards a zero carbon energy system and detail the necessary actions to transform energy consumption and generation within the borough.

The plan is being drafted in collaboration with experts from the public, private, and third sectors, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to address the key sources of emissions, which include homes, transport, and businesses. It aligns with the Welsh Government’s ambitious goal of making Wales carbon zero by 2050, with local authorities expected to reach net carbon zero by 2030.

Net carbon zero refers to achieving a balance between the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere and the carbon removed from it. This equilibrium can be accomplished through emission reduction strategies, increased carbon capture through industrial processes, and the preservation of vital ecosystems such as forests, wildflower meadows, and peatbogs.

Councillor Mandy Owen, the Executive Member for Environment, emphasized the importance of taking action sooner rather than later, stating, “2050 feels a long way off but it’s important we consider what infrastructure changes need to take place so we can start reducing emissions on a large scale as soon as possible.” She also highlighted the significance of the Local Area Energy Plan in supporting the journey towards net zero. Torfaen’s Climate and Nature Emergency Action Plan and County Plan further prioritize carbon emission reduction and the protection of natural habitats.

Coinciding with the development of the plan, Torfaen is observing Net Zero Week, providing an opportune moment for individuals to reflect on reducing their own carbon footprints. By encouraging collective efforts, the borough aims to create a sustainable and environmentally conscious community.

The coordination of local area energy planning across the Cardiff Capital Region is spearheaded by the authorities, with the goal of finalizing plans by March 2024.
