Bungalow next to village shop in Portskewett to be replaced with three flats

A BUNGALOW next to a village shop is to be demolished and replaced with three flats despite objections from neighbours.

Residents from seven addresses had sent letters addressing concerns around parking at the Premier grocery store on Main Road, Portskewett which described “dangerous” parking outside the store as a “daily occurrence” and a “chaotic, often dangerous, customer parking situation especially at peak times”.

Portskewett Community Council said it supported the extension of the shop “that provides a vital service to the community” but said parking required “careful consideration”.

The redevelopment will provide a new doorway and back storeroom for the shop while the bungalow will be replaced with a two-storey unit, including a first floor extension above the shop including the small extension to the front and back.

Monmouthshire County Council’s planning committee, which had to decide the application due to the number of objections, was told three off street parking spaces in front of the existing bungalow will be retained and there is no off-street parking for customers or deliveries.

The council’s highways department made no objection to the plan.

The western part of the site is within a flood risk area, identified by the Welsh Government’s latest Technical Advice Note (TAN) 15, which has brought in a stricter approach to flooding risk.

But planning officer Andrew Jones said while the much delayed notice came was published at the end of March applications submitted and registered before that date aren’t subject to it.

The application was approved unanimously.
