New member of Monmouth town council to be elected this week

VOTERS in Monmouth will elect a new member of the town council at a by-election this week.

It is to fill a vacancy in the town ward and the only two candidates are from the Welsh Conservative and Welsh Labour parties.

Labour defeated the Conservatives in a by-election in the ward in December last year by just five votes.

George Rist resigned his seat in March and pleaded guilty in April to charges of causing harassment, alarm or distress and of racially and religiously aggravated abuse of a doorman at a pub in Monmouth.

Labour’s candidate at this election is Sarah Louise James while Martin Jason Newell is the Conservative candidate.

Polls are open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, June 6, to registered voters aged 16 and over and there is no need to bring photo ID to vote in council elections.
