SIGNS showing drivers what speed they are travelling at are to be installed on a road where a woman was hit by a lorry last month.
The 51-year-old was returning from Chepstow Leisure Centre when she was struck by a lorry on Welsh Street and had to undergo surgery after suffering multiple broken bones.
Local councillor Christopher Edwards said there have been a number of a safety concerns raised on the road that runs from the roundabout, near Chepstow Racecourse, into the town centre.
He asked for an update on Monmouthshire County Council’s plans to improve road safety along Welsh Street at the authority’s March meeting.
He said: “There has been a considerable number of near misses reported to me by parents and residents and I feel a review is overdue. The road is used by those visiting the leisure centre, the racecourse and it passes both the primary and secondary schools.”

Cllr Edwards said a previous review of the road had led to road markings being repainted, improvements to road signs and trees being cut back but said there hadn’t been one since the May 2022 local government elections.

Council cabinet member Catrin Maby confirmed new speed indication signs will be installed at either end of Welsh Street over the next few weeks. She also said the council monitors casualty statistics and acknowledged “local knowledge about near misses doesn’t feature in the statistics.”
Conservative Cllr Edwards also asked for information “on any progress” of grant funding bids for road safety improvement works for St Lawrence Road, between Kingsmark Lane/Barnets Wood, and the Racecourse roundabout.
Labour’s Cllr Maby said there were no current bids for funding and the last submitted was in 2022 but was unsuccessful.
Cllr Edwards said he believed such bids were submitted every year when the Conservatives ran the council and asked if a junction at a “busy” local shop could be reviewed.
Cllr Maby said the issues would be raised with the council’s traffic team.
Gwent Police said a 30-year-old man, from Sedbury, arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving has since been released under investigation.
