Deliberate wildfire ravages welsh mountain as residents urged to stay indoors

A significant wildfire devastated approximately 20 hectares of grassland, scrub, and small trees on Tarren Rhiw-llech, near Cymmer in Port Talbot, on Sunday, March 23. The blaze, visible from surrounding villages, prompted a substantial emergency response.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service received the initial call at 5:09 PM, dispatching crews from Cymmer and Neath fire stations. Firefighters employed beaters and knapsacks to control the flames, working diligently through the night. The operation concluded just after 9:00 AM on Monday, March 24.

In response to the heavy smoke and ash, Cymmer Fire Station advised residents to keep windows and doors closed. A statement from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service noted that while the cause of the fire remains undetermined, it is believed to have been deliberate.

This incident follows a series of grass fires across south and mid Wales. The previous week saw South Wales Fire and Rescue Service tackle 24 grass fires on Tuesday night alone, following 300 emergency calls. One notable wildfire near Treorchy in the Rhondda region affected approximately 199 hectares, leaving extensive areas of the mountain scorched.

These events highlight ongoing concerns about arson in the region. In May 2023, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service warned that repeated arson attacks at the former Baglan Bay Power Station were endangering lives. The site has also experienced issues with trespassing and theft.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to ensure the safety of their communities. Deliberate fires not only pose immediate dangers but also divert essential resources from other emergencies.
