Extra trains, summer boosts, and contactless pay-as-you-go travel introduced across the network
PASSENGERS travelling across North and West Wales are set to benefit from a major uplift in rail services as Transport for Wales prepares to introduce a new timetable from Sunday, May 17.
TfW says the changes will bring more frequent trains, extra capacity, and easier journey planning, with the most significant improvements focused on the North Wales Coast Line, where services will increase by around 50%.
The timetable shake-up is being described as one of the biggest changes for North Wales in years, strengthening links between communities and supporting growing demand for more sustainable travel.
A key feature of the new timetable will be the introduction of a standard hourly pattern on routes north and west of Shrewsbury (excluding Wrexham and Bidston), aimed at making travel simpler and more predictable for passengers.
TfW says the changes will also deliver a significant boost in frequency and capacity on the busy stretch between Chester and Llandudno Junction, one of the busiest parts of the Wales and Borders rail network.
Summer boost for West Wales
In West Wales, TfW will introduce extra summer trains, including additional services on popular holiday routes and increased Sunday trains. The move is expected to support the region’s tourism economy during the peak travel season.
Safety works underway
To support the increased number of services, Network Rail has been carrying out infrastructure and safety improvements across the network.
New footbridges are being installed at Prestatyn and Pensarn, replacing high-risk level crossings and providing step-free access across the railway.
Network Rail has also delivered a series of level crossing upgrades, including temporary closures and diversion routes at Sandy Lane and Beverley Drive, seasonal crossing stewards at Pen Uchaf and Ty Gwyn, and new miniature stop lights at Flint Marsh, with further improvements planned at Stokyn Lodge and Fishpool Farm.
Both organisations have urged the public to remain vigilant as more trains begin running.
Pay-as-you-go coming to North Wales
The timetable change will be followed by the rollout of pay as you go contactless travel in North Wales on May 18.
The tap-in, tap-out system will cover 15 stations between Wrexham General and Bidston, offering passengers a more flexible way to travel while ensuring they pay the best value fare.
The scheme builds on its earlier rollout in South East Wales.
‘A significant step forward’
Colin Lea, TfW Planning and Performance Director, said: “We’re now just days away from delivering a major improvement to rail services as part of Network North Wales.
“The new timetable will bring more frequent trains and better connections for our customers in North and West Wales.
“These changes represent a significant step forward, with a simpler, more consistent timetable and increased capacity across some of our busiest routes. Alongside the introduction of pay as you go, we’re making it easier than ever for people to choose rail and travel sustainably.”
Nick Millington, Network Rail route director, said: “We’ve been working hard for 18 months to prepare the railway to deliver these additional services, which support more low carbon journeys, better connectivity for employment and tourism helping local economies grow.
“Safety remains our priority as we support these welcomed changes across North and West Wales. With more trains running, we’re asking everyone to stay alert, particularly at level crossings, and to take extra care when near the railway.”
Check before you travel
Passengers are being advised to check services before travelling, as some trains may call at different stations and connection times could change.
