Major Cardiff railway line to close for two weeks

A key Cardiff railway line, the Coryton line, will be closed for a fortnight to allow essential engineering work to take place. The closure, scheduled from Monday, 7 October to Sunday, 20 October, will mean no rail services operating between Coryton, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Ty Glas, or Heath Low Level during this period.

The temporary shutdown is part of Transport for Wales’ (TfW) ongoing electrification project, which is aimed at upgrading the line for future use. This will allow infrastructure teams to carry out daytime work, reducing the need for disruptive night-time construction, which has previously impacted nearby residents.

To minimise inconvenience, Cardiff Bus services will honour train tickets for passengers travelling between the city centre and Coryton throughout the closure. TfW is advising all passengers to check the latest travel information before setting off, as additional closures are planned for the end of October and early November 2024. The full schedule of closures can be found online.

The electrification work is expected to be completed by November 2024, with new trains planned to operate on the Coryton line from spring 2025. This upgrade will also affect services to Penarth, as Coryton trains travel onwards to this area. As a result, from Wednesday, 9 October to Sunday, 20 October, Penarth services will be reduced to two per hour, with half-hourly trains running between Penarth, Cardiff, and Caerphilly.

To further support passengers during the disruption, a rail replacement bus service will run during peak times. Buses will operate every 30 minutes from Wednesday, 9 October to Friday, 11 October, and again from Monday, 14 October to Friday, 18 October. However, there will be no Coryton-to-Penarth services, and no trains at all will run between Cardiff and Penarth on Monday, 7 October and Tuesday, 8 October.
