THE NAMES of two new schools being built in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) have been chosen.
A new additional learning needs school in Clydach Vale will be called Ysgol Cambrian and a new primary school in Glyncoch will be called Ysgol Gynradd Glyn-coch.
The names were approved by cabinet on Monday, December 15 and both schools are scheduled to open in September 2026.
In June 2022, cabinet formally agreed to a proposal to create a new community primary school in Glyncoch, replacing both Cefn and Craig-yr-Hesg primary schools.
Cabinet also agreed in January 2024 to open a new ALN school in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The names were recommended by the governing bodies of the schools following consultation with pupil represenatives.
The other names consulted on for the new ALN school included Ysgol Bryn Awel, Ysgol Bryn Glo and Ysgol Llyn Clydach.
The governing body met in November and proposed to name the new school Ysgol Cambrian, taking into account the feedback received from pupils.
The other names consulted on for the new school in Glyncoch included Glyn-coch Primary School, The Fern Community School and Glyn-coch Community School.
Following a meeting of the temporary governing body of the new primary school, the consensus reached was to recommend Glyn-coch Primary School as the new name.
Discussions were held in relation to including “community” in the name of the new school but governors decided hat they would propose the name voted for by the majority of respondents during the consultation period.
However, in the spirit of a bilingual Wales and the ongoing promotion of the Welsh language in Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the temporary governing body proposed that a Welsh only name should be used for the new primary school in Glyn-coch, and that the new school should be named Ysgol Gynradd Glyn-coch.
