Dog, now named Mabel, is recovering in foster care after being discovered in a ‘bag of bones’ condition
RSPCA CYMRU has launched an appeal for information after an underweight greyhound was found straying in the Cardiff area in a severely emaciated condition.
The female greyhound, now named Mabel, was discovered in the Cefn Mably and Michaelston-y-Fedw area on the evening of Wednesday, November 19. She was taken by a member of the public to the PDSA for urgent veterinary treatment before being placed in the care of Cardiff Dogs Home.
RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Black has been leading enquiries to establish where the dog came from and how she came to be in such a poor state.

“When I met Mabel, I can only describe her as being a bag of bones,” DCI Black said.
“We are so grateful to the person who took her to the PDSA, who provided her with the care and treatment she needed, and to Cardiff Dogs Home for taking her into their care. We have been working in the background following up a number of leads, but we are still appealing for further information regarding who may have owned Mabel.”
Mabel, who is officially under the care of Cardiff Dogs Home and is currently being fostered, has responded well to treatment. Since December 10 she has gained around 3.5kg and is continuing her recovery.
Inspector Black added: “We would like to thank everyone at the PDSA and Cardiff Dogs Home for caring for this lovely dog, and we wish her a speedy recovery.”
The RSPCA is urging anyone with first-hand information about Mabel’s ownership or circumstances to contact its Inspectorate Appeal Line on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident number 1682725.
The appeal comes as the RSPCA reports a worrying rise in animal abandonment cases, which are on course to reach a six-year high. The charity says its frontline rescuers are dealing with increasing numbers of animals suffering from neglect and cruelty, while its animal centres continue to work to find safe, permanent homes for rescued pets.
This winter, RSPCA Cymru is supporting the charity’s Big Give Back to Animals appeal, which aims to raise vital funds to help frontline teams continue their work supporting animals in need.
