South Wales shoppers to award £5,000 Golden Grant this Saturday

CUSTOMERS across South Wales will have the chance to start their local school’s academic year off with a bang this Saturday by awarding a £5,000 grant as part of Tesco’s Golden Grants event.

From 12 noon to 1pm at the Tesco Pencoed Express, Canton Cardiff City Express, Llanelli Extra and the Pontypool Superstore, shoppers will be able to take part in a special lucky dip to find a golden voting token and award a grant to one of three local schools.

The schools in Pencoed hoping to secure the £5,000 are Nottage Primary School PTA, which is looking to purchase construction equipment for an outdoor classroom, Oldcastle Primary School, which is aiming to buy supplies for its community pantry; and Ysgol Gymraeg Calon y Cymoedd, which is looking to add to its inclusive outdoor sensory garden.     

The schools in Cardiff hoping to secure the £5,000 are Bryn Deri PTA who are looking to develop their school’s play equipment; Llysfaen Primary School PTA who would like to install a new outdoor trim trail; and St Nicholas Church in Wales Primary School who would like to purchase resoures for a new cookery club.  

In Llanelli, the schools hoping to secure the £5,000 are Burry Port Community Primary School, which is looking to create a new forest school area; Halfway Primary School which is looking to purchase some Lego coding equipment; and Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes who are hoping to invest in facilities for children to grow their own produce.

Finally in Pontypool, the schools hoping to secure the £5,000 are Blaenavon Heritage VC Primary School which is looking to put on a fun day for its students; Padre Pio School which is looking to improve its outdoor play equipment; and Penygarn Community Primary School which is looking to provide food parcels for local families enabling them to cook healthy meals on a small budget. 

Conor Sherman, store manager at Pencoed Express, said: “We are delighted to be hosting Golden Grants this Saturday. Our store colleagues will be creating a party atmosphere for an event which will see a lucky customer get the chance to award a £5,000 grant to a fantastic local cause.

“Tesco’s Stronger Starts programme has a fantastic track record of helping local schools, charities and community groups in the area and we look forward to giving customers the chance to help continue that great work on Saturday.”

There will be 107 specially selected Tesco stores taking part in Saturday’s Golden Grants event across the UK, which will see a total of more than £500,000 awarded to local school projects.

The event is part of Tesco’s £8million Stronger Starts programme, which supports children and young people in local communities access healthy nutritious food as well as activities designed to improve their physical health.
