A CWMBRAN school’s outdated all weather sports pitch could be replaced with a 3G field by the end of March next year.
Cwmbran High School was promised a modern, soft, artificial grass pitch to replace the existing clay and limestone gravel surface in December last year.
Councillor Richard Clark, the Labour council cabinet member for education, told Torfaen Borough Council’s April meeting funding has now been agreed in principle and a planning application submitted.
The Croesyceiliog councillor said: “I can confirm funding has now been agreed in principle for the pitch at Cwmbran High and a planning application submitted. The aim is it will be completed by the end of the 2025/26 financial year but a delivery plan will be confirmed once we know planning is approved and the funding finalised.”
Llantarnam councillor David Thomas had asked for a construction timescale having first asked about plans in December.
The Reform UK member said: “There are lots of children in my ward who I know are keen to see this come to fruition.”
Labour’s Cllr Clark said the cabinet had identified increasing the number of all weather surfaces as a priority when there was just one 3G pitch in all of Torfaen.
Pitches have since opened at Abersychan and Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw, in Trevethin, while a new pitch at Llantarnam is “coming along nicely” added Cllr Clark.
