Eighth person charged over fatal shooting of Joanne Penney

Pre-trial hearing set for July as murder investigation widens

AN EIGHTH person has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old woman at a flat in Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Joanne Penney was found with serious injuries at Green Park on 9 March and was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination confirmed she had been shot in the chest, suffering fatal wounds to her heart and lung.

Seven people have already been remanded in custody in relation to the case. Five have been charged with murder, one with assisting an offender, and one with participating in the activities of an organised crime group.

Molly Cooper, aged 33 and from Leicester, appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court on Monday (June 10) charged with participating in the activities of an organised crime group and acquiring ammunition without a certificate.

She was remanded in custody and her case has now been joined with the seven other defendants. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for 7 July, with a full trial due to begin on 20 October.

At the opening of an inquest in March, the coroner heard that Ms Penney died of gunshot wounds to the chest.

In a family tribute released by South Wales Police, her loved ones said: “Her kindness, strength and love for her family will never be forgotten. We are devastated by her loss.”
