TOM REASON began his career with Barratt Homes ten years ago, in one of the first cohorts of the housebuilder’s innovative foundation degree undergraduate course. Now — with extensive experience and a prestigious industry award under his belt. Tom is taking on the construction of Barratt Homes South Wales’ newest development, Holly View.
Tom worked full-time with Barratt whilst studying part-time for his BSc (Hons) Degree in Residential Development and Construction at Sheffield Hallam University allowing him to apply learnings to his work on a day-to-day basis.
Since qualifying as site manager in 2019, Tom has worked on award-winning sites across a variety of Wales and South-west locations finding life-long friends in the team he is surrounded by every day.
Tom cites the problem-solving challenges of managing a building site as one of his favourite parts of the job, because no two days are ever the same. Plus, the satisfaction of seeing a customer’s smile when they move into their new home.
Fast-forward to June this year, and Tom was awarded a Pride in the Job Quality Award from the National House Building Council (NHBC) for demonstrating exceptional standards in the new communities he has built.
Each site manager is judged on a range of key criteria including health and safety, their technical knowledge, customer service and attention to detail — expertise across all of which Tom will now bring to Holly View in Cwmbran.
Just 450 winners are selected from over 8,000 entrants, ranking Tom in the top 5% in British housebuilding.
On winning the award, Tom said: “I’ve been supported by Barratt from the very first day of my career, so it’s an honour to have won a Pride in the Job Award for one of its developments, shining a light on the outstanding work being done by the whole team.
“Having just completed the popular Forest Grove development in Gloucestershire, I’m looking forward to taking on this new challenge back on Welsh soil — building a community to suit a range of buyers in St Dials.”
Holly View is set to be built on the site of the former Gwent Police College, the first purpose-built police academy of its kind in the UK when it opened in July 1974. Tom and his team will transform the site over the coming months with a range of different home styles and on-site facilities including two children’s play areas and twenty-one affordable units.
Its central location means residents of the new development will benefit from being just minutes from Cwmbran Shopping Centre, whilst also enjoying 3.4 acres of green open space, complete with over 7,500 new trees, shrubs and plants planted by Barratt. Scenic walking routes are just a stone’s throw away, too — including Cwmbran Boating Lake.
David Kelland, Operations Director at Barratt Developments South Wales, said: “It’s been a privilege to watch Tom’s career grow throughout his time at Barratt and we can’t wait to see yet another development brought to life to the highest of standards under his supervision.
“Having started building in August, we know that those looking to buy a new build home in and around Cwmbran will be as excited as we are to grow a community here.”
