A SINGLE mum who started her own dog grooming business now plans to expand with her daughter to provide a “doggy day care” service.
Kathryn Davies runs Kabokane K9 Services from a commercial unit previously used for the maintenance and storage of HGVs at her home at Old Station House in Church Road, Talywain, Pontypool.
She has now made a planning application to insert arched windows on the already created mezzanine level as well as kennels to the building.
Permission is also requested for a portable cabin that is already on site and the application aims to regularise and formalise the existing dog breeding uses at the address as well as the grooming business and gain permission for the proposed “doggy day care business”.
Ms Davies has operated from the Old Station House since January 2023 and was previously based at the Varteg.
She said: “I’ve been a self-employed dog groomer for about 13 years. I started off, and trained myself, as I kept German Shepherds and after I got divorced I was on my own with three children and dog grooming was all I knew and I started out doing that.
“I’m a licensed breeder and I want to expand to dog boarding, it will be a family business, and my daughter Brooke, 19, will be doing that side of it.”
It is anticipated approval will create one additional full-time and one part-time post.
A static caravan will also be removed from the site and a storage container relocated.
Details on materials to be used and landscaping are included in the application that is being considered by Torfaen Borough Council’s planning department.
